6/3/08: Cheated a Cap Bust
Shari and I left OKC at 12:30 PM enroute north along I-35 then I-135 from Wichita hoping that the cap would eventually break. We waited for hours in the Newton, KS area until the cap finally did break. Unfortunately, it broke way east of us. So east we went.
We finally caught the storm using back roads to get over to US-50 and then blasting northeast on US-50 to Emporia, where we picked up I-35, went north on US-75, picked up K-68 near Lyndon and went east toward Pomona.
As we approached the storm, the structure looked like it was going to be an impressive storm. And then it sensed our approach and started to mush out some. It was the last storm in a line that stretched well east of Kansas City.
We finally reached the storm around 8:20 PM in the fading light. The storm was pretty electric, but other than the occasional, brief, disorganized wall cloud, the storm didn’t really do much. It was definitely a slowpoke, though, so that made it easy to photograph.
Following the storm as far as Ottawa, we broke off the chase and started the (long) drive back to OKC, getting back around 3:30 AM.
Random note: Ottawa is a very charming little town, much like many others in the Kansas. I just had to take a couple pics of the lit-up county courthouse as we drove past.
